Likes. Reach. Impressions. Followers. Engagement rate. They climb, you feel good. They dip; you panic.

But here’s the question almost nobody stops to ask: which of these numbers actually tells you whether your marketing is working?

Because most of them don’t.

Most businesses track the numbers that are easy to see, not the ones that matter. And that one habit quietly leads to a lot of bad decisions. So, let’s sort the numbers that feel important from the ones that actually are.

The numbers that feel good and tell you nothing

Some metrics exist mainly to make you feel busy.

Follower count. A big number and a small signal. Ten thousand followers who never enquire are a trophy, not a business. Plenty of brands with modest followings out-earn ones with ten times the audience.

Likes. A like costs nothing and commits to nothing. It tells you a thumb moved. It doesn’t tell you anyone’s reaching for their wallet.

Reach and impressions. These count how many people saw your post, not whether it did anything. A thousand people scrolling past is still a thousand people scrolling past.

Engagement rate. Better than most, because it shows people are responding. But engagement still isn’t enquiries. A post can go quietly viral and bring you exactly zero new clients. The reason these are so seductive is simple. They’re public, they’re instant, and they go up easily. They make you feel visible. But not one of them clears an invoice. To be fair, they aren’t useless. They’re early hints that people are noticing you, which matters. The mistake is treating a hint as the goal.

The marketing metrics that actually move your business. These ones are quieter, harder to see and far less flattering. They’re also the only numbers that tell you whether your marketing is actually working.

Enquiries and leads. Whether your goal is lead generation or direct sales, this is where marketing stops being a performance and starts becoming a pipeline.

Conversion rate. Of the people who land on your page or see your offer, how many take the next step. This tells you whether your message and your offer are doing their job, or just looking nice.

Cost per enquiry. Often called customer acquisition cost, this tells you what you’re spending to bring one genuinely interested person into your pipeline. This is the number that tells you whether your spending is working or just disappearing.

Customer value and repeat rate. What a customer is worth over time, and how often they come back. A customer who returns four times is worth far more than one who buys once, and that single fact changes what you can afford to spend to win them.

Return on what you spend (ROI). The plainest question of all. Did the marketing earn more than it cost? None of these numbers are particularly exciting to look at. They don’t generate screenshots for LinkedIn or spark conversations in the office. But they’re the numbers that quietly determine whether your business is becoming more profitable every month.

A simple test for any marketing metric

You don’t need a spreadsheet full of metrics. You need a filter. For any number you’re tracking, ask one question: if this went up, would I make more money? If the answer is yes, it matters. If you’re not sure, it’s probably a vanity metric wearing a serious costume. That single question will quietly clear most of the clutter off your dashboard.

Why tracking the right marketing metrics matters

When you chase the wrong numbers, you make the wrong calls.

You’ll keep running the post that got two hundred likes and no enquiries, and quietly drop the one that got forty likes and three leads. You’ll pour effort into growing an audience that never buys. You’ll optimise for applause instead of revenue, and wonder why a busy account isn’t turning into a busy calendar.

The businesses that win aren’t the ones with the biggest audiences. They’re the ones watching the handful of numbers that connect to the bank.

Which marketing metrics should you actually track?

Keep it small. Pick three to five numbers that tie directly to money, something like enquiries, conversion rate, and cost per enquiry, and make those your scoreboard. Watch the vanity numbers if you like, but treat them as hints, not scores. And review them monthly against your goals, not daily against your mood. Marketing looks like a disaster every Tuesday and a triumph every Friday if you check it hourly.

Towards your North

Marketing isn’t a popularity contest, even though every platform is built to make it feel like one. The numbers that matter are quieter, less flattering and far more useful than the ones designed to keep you scrolling. Measure those, and you’ll always know whether your marketing is working, instead of just hoping it is.

Against the grain. Towards your North.

Not sure which of your numbers actually matter?
